Ezra's Aphorism
Dropping the hammer
Society urges men to humbly rise—
Yet ego persuades them to stand in pride.
Ezra Godson
There’s a thoughtful proverb when translated from Mandarin into English that reads something like this: the tallest nail is the one you hit on the head with the hammer. A lot can be said about standing out among your peers. Your gifts and talents will make you outshine the dull lights of mediocrity. However, in today’s competitive society, it pays to keep your achievements hidden for a while before you announce them. People are waiting in the wings to discourage, condemn, and thwart your efforts to create success for yourself. Humility doesn’t mean being modest. It means remaining level-headed and authentic despite your rise. If you suck all the air out of the room, remember, you will choke too. Remember to remain grounded, thankful, and approachable no matter how far your success takes you.
